Street Minister

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Bruce Hamm
Title: Street Minister
Gear used: OM-2n + 50mm F1.2
Diaphragm: Unrecorded (fairly wide)
Shutter speed: Unrecorded (fairly slow)
Film used: Kodak T400CN
Technical information: I should'a used a tripod...
Subject information: I was out trying to capture a specific for TOPE and wasn't having much luck. (I still have yet to capture the specific shot I had in mind). However, I happened to stumble upon a street minister witnessing to a group of people on a street corner. He told a story of how he had achieved a fair amount of success at a young age, but unfortunately fell victim to the temptations of drugs and alcohol. He lost everything he had to his addictions and in his darkest moments, he suffered a further setback upon discovering that he had cancer. Modern medicine had all but written him off, when by some "miracle" he managed a complete recovery. Shortly thereafter, he discovered his calling and can now be found witnessing to less fortunates (and the occasional nosey photographer) on downtown street corners.

Also, in your e-mail you mentioned this was actually classifie a reject by you, well, I say this is a fine shot period, but more so for a reject! :)

Comment left by: Tris Schuler (tristanjohn@mindspring.com) I don't work with chromes much but even with their narrow dynamic range I'd think some detail should be available in the shadow of the face. I'd simply expose that area of the picture another 20% or so. Even a hint of detail, say subdued highlights, would make for a stronger image. Good picture anyway, though. Love those street horns!

Comment left by: Tris Schuler (tristanjohn@mindspring.com) Sorry. That last comment was meant for The Jazzman.

Comment left by: Bill Barber (nsurit@aol.com) Nice photograph that certainly captures a particular element of society and the human condition. There are some technical aspects that could be changed (as noted by you) and I don't know that they would have made it any better. I can almost hear him talking. Nicely done.

Comment left by: Jim Caldwell (jamesfc@gte.net) Nice shot, could have used maybe a little fill flash to add a bit more contrast to the subject. This theme was a tough one for me too!!
