Pacifier!

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Jim Caldwell
Title: Pacifier!
Gear used: OM-4Ti + 35-70 f/4 + T-32 flash off camera for fill
Diaphragm: f8
Shutter speed: 1/60
Film used: Kodacolor Gold 100 ASA.
Technical information: I connected the flash unit to the camera via a TTL cable to provide a bit of fill flash, to put a little highlight in the eyes and lighten the dark fur. The flash was off to the right about 5 feet.
Subject information: I was going to include a shot of construction that is a grassroots movement of construction workers who volunteered to build a new facility for these chimpanzees (please check www.chimpfarm.org - donations are welcome!), but this photo of one of the volunteer's granddaughter really signifies humanity and community to me! This little girl was really bored with the shooting and the 4 year old chimp, Shawn, was quite taken with the little girl! A lot can be said for the human condition in this photo!!

Priceless shot!

Comment left by: Eric Pederson (epederso@darkwing.uoregon.edu) More of an ape society picture than narrowly human society, but it is just lovely. Great expressions on both faces. There is a nice uncertainty about the child's expression: unhappy about the chimp, or unhappy about something else and the chimp is trying to comfort? The garland and pacifier add a nice comic touch. (Without being campy as having the garland on the chimp would have done).

Comment left by: Bruce Hamm (bhamm@magma.ca) Talk about the decisive moment. I love it!

Comment left by: Bill Barber (nsurit@aol.com) It makes me laugh. Quite different emotions each of the subjects. Nicely done.

Comment left by: Les Clark (ll.clark@verizon.net) An utterly winning shot. Just beautiful. A
true treasure.

Comment left by: Susan Steele (DaEyeGuy@AOL.com) How priceless this shot is! The amorous look on the chimp versus the uncertainty on the child's face makes this one utterly delicious! One must wonder what is inspiring the the adulation: the little girl or the "Paci"...I just love this!

Comment left by: Adam Bolt (boldbolty@iprimus.com.au) At first I thought... Where does "Human Society fit in with this shot?" then I thought about our history from ape-man to humanisation as we know it today. It's a priceless shot and a perfect shot with "Tounge in Cheek" for Human Society and how we have evolved.
