Why me?

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Henrik Dahl
Title: Why me?
Gear used: OM-4T + 24/2.8
Diaphragm: f2.8 or f4
Shutterspeed: N/A
Film used: Fuji Press 200 ASA
Technical information: Daylight, no flash.
Subject information: The hunting of elk (moose?) is a huge thing in Sweden come october. It's very much a macho thing, of course. I thought some about what this elk was doing the very moment it was shot. I think it died with quite a surprised and somewhat accusing glance in its eye, just because a human wanted to "show off" for his mates. But it's good meat...

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) A very impressive picture.

One's got to feel sorry for the elk, but indeed, meat is an important part of our food, so an integral part of our human society consists of killing animals in order to eat them...

Regarding the technical aspects of this picture: you composed it really well. You must have been very close to the elk in order to get out of focus parts with a 24mm!

Comment left by: Henrik Dahl (no e-mail specified) Close? I was practically laying on top of it. Still haven't been able to wash those bloodstains from my trousers ;-)

Comment left by: Eric Pederson (epederso@darkwing.uoregon.edu) Not to belittle the photograph, but I guess I'll complain about its inclusion. I don't really see this as a "human society" shot. What about a photograph of sand (used to make glass which is very important in human society) or a tree (wood products), etc.?
Also it apparently was exposed well after the time window ("october")? Not such a big deal, but given its tenuous relation to the theme, it seems a particularly odd late inclusion.
I prefer TOPE as a game with rules to play with. My two cents...

Comment left by: Henrik Dahl (hdahl@privat.utfors.se) Eric, to me this was the "eye of the victim of human society". I agree it's not the most obvious motive, but I thought it to be representative. It hasn't got to do with the different materials society is built of, I simply felt watched and accused as being human and behaving as one.
Regarding the late submission I took a chance, and I see others are still sending in stuff. Rules are nice, but a well filled TOPE is nicer ;-)
Regards.

Comment left by: Eric Pederson (epederso@darkwing.uoregon.edu) Henrik: Thanks, for your reply. That explanation of the motivation for the shot helps situate the photograph in the set much better for me.

In that case, a critique: I think this motivation would have been clearer in the image itself if the elk were more obviously dead and dead from human activity. I love the eye, but I can't quite see it looking at me accusingly. Gee, am I calling for blood? :-)
