Submitter's name: Scott Gomez
Title: Second Millennium Marketplace
Gear used: OM-2n + 24/2.8, hand-held, available light
Diaphragm: f8
Shutter speed: Auto
Film used: Kodacolor Gold 200
Technical information: Scanned with the Acer Scanwit, then slightly cropped, color corrected (the lights gave things a yellowish cast) and slightly sharpened in Photoshop 5.5.
Subject information: Shot on Sunday of the US Labor Day holiday. I was trying to get the 'sense' of the 24mm lens' ability to take in a broad perspective in tight quarters and--not nearly as successfully as I'd hoped--to convey the crowded, busy and multi-ethnic sense of the monthly LA Computer Fair. This was my second idea for TOPE 7, the requirements for which gave me some conceptual grief. The results of the first idea I had simply didn't please me at all. This was the best shot of the bunch for the second concept, I felt, but still doesn't capture just how crowded a venue this is. One often has to literally wedge through the crowds in the various aisles. I think I'll be trying to shoot this again some time.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) For slightly more "impact" you could have tried to step a little closer to a small group of people so they're emphasised by being rendered much bigger than the other things in the picture. Alternatively, you could have gone the other way: by using a telephoto lens you could have compressed the people so the scene would look more packed than it is already (don't forget that a wide angle "creates" more space between the various people in the picture than in reality is present).

Still, I think you got a pretty good effect, and it's hard to tell that it was shot with an ultra wide angle. I like the picture as-is.
