Magic mind

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Olaf Greve
Title: Magic mind
Gear used: OM-4Ti + Zuiko 24/2.8
Diaphragm: f4
Shutter speed: Around 1/30th
Film used: Fuji Provia 100F (RDP III)
Technical information: I wanted to take this picture with a wide angle, such that DOF would be much greater than when using a short tele. For this type of pictures, I think a wide angle works better than a short tele, as it gives a completely different perspective, in which the surroundings of the subject are drawn in too. Previously, I would have taken this picture from a longer distance, using the 100/2, but nowadays I more and more use the 24mm for this type of shot (again, because of its radically different perspective).
Digital techniques: The slide was scanned on a Umax Powerlook III scanner.
No edits were made, and the slide of course looks better than the scan, but for a quick scan I think the results are O.K.
Subject information: This picture was taken in a small shopping mall in the centre of The Hague (The Netherlands), while waiting for a tarot card reader to finish his story about Gioconda's mother's future, this mime player appeared on the scene; a perfect opportunity for giving my 24/2.8 some work out in this kind of situation.
Other candidates: As always, I had several candidate shots, so as to please Ob*n, I invite you to take a look at my "essential runner up page" as well. ;)

It was a bit difficult for me to select the "most suited" picture for the event, so I asked several other people, and almost all of them included the mime player in their favourites, so I decided to go for that one (which is the easthetically most pleasing shot of my candidates).

Comment left by: Mickey Trageser (no e-mail specified) Cool shot! I like the use of the wide. I'm surprised by the red plaid hat!

Comment left by: Peter Leyssens (no e-mail specified) It's not so very easy to make out the figure. The plaid hat is just a shade off of the colors of the flowers. And his black suit follows the line of the bow of plants above his head. Let's say he "blends into the flower pot rather well". On the other hand, he's central, and the lines on the floor point toward him. Overall, if the flowers and plants would've been brighter, or wouldn't have been there, or he would've been wearing a bright yellow clown suit, it would come out stronger.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) Peter, you're right about what you say, I think the overall contrast is pretty off in the scan (in the slide this is significantly better).

Unfortunately I'm a disaster at scanning pictures/slides, but who knows if someday I have a nice slide scanner of my own, I may re-do some scans (amongst which this one).
