Crowd under attention

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Marc Simon
Title: Crowd under attention
Gear used: OM 4 Ti + Zuiko Mirror 500mm f/8 + Vivitar 2X macro-converter
Shutter speed: Between 1/250 and 1/500th
Film used: Agfa Vista 400
Technical information: (exposure in auto mode)
I had no tripod so I "put" my lens on the safety bar of a crane nacelle in which I was not comfortable but it works...
Subject information: I won't give the details now as it could be easier to "track me"...
The only thing I'll tell is that it was shot during a sports event.

Comment left by: Tris Schuler (tristanjohn@mindspring.com) Is this a little bit like "I've Got a Secret"?

Comment left by: Anonymous Visitor Not sure I like the bokeh of the background. Is this because of the lens type (mirror) or something else ?

Comment left by: Charles Packard (packardc@hiwaay.net) Sporting event & "track"?...A few people come to mind.
The photo fits the TOPE theme well. It shows how as a society we will willingly and happily pay to crowd together shoulder to shoulder for hours just for the chance to see a race car crash. Just kidding!!
For me the camera man in the foreground is getting lost in the "noisy" background. Perhaps cropping the left edge where the crowd thins out would balance foreground and background a little better.

Comment left by: Gregg (golftooter@earthlink.net) The background makes me dizzy, maybe a little like cars going round and round in a crash. Seems strange to see so many older men at a sporting event and even (at least) one in a tie!

Comment left by: Anonymous Visitor About Charles's comment regarding "cropping the left":
you are totaly right, I've tried it and the picture works better without the "extreme left people".
I'll be "out of town" for some times but when I'll be back I'll send a croped one to Olafo to replace this one if he agree. I've submited the picture as I've shooted it, but with some cropping it will be more like I wanted.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) The picture that was posted here initially has now (November 19th, 2001) been replaced by a cropped version of it. I too think this picture works better.

Comment left by: marc simon (marc.simon@advalvas.be) Following the suggestion of Charles, I've cropped the picture and it's now more like the one I wanted.
This picture was made during the Belgian Formula One Grand Prix, I was in a nacelle over the track so I cannot change my point of view and my lens was already an 1000mm equivalent !
Those people are the guests of the companies who have the "chance" to visit the "saint des saint" the pit-lane of a Grand Prix just one hour before the start...but they are so numerous and the time of the visit so short that they probably have just a "fugitive vision of...a little bit of a Ferrari or a Mac Laren..." but they could say "I was there !" It's so funny to see all those people directed like a flock of sheep between some guardians, not always very friendly... and each of them "cost" around 600 $ to the company which have invited them !
So Charles you are right, somebody paid for people being "crowded" and those invited by Ferrari who have the best place in Francorchamps, in the Virage de la Source just after the start cannot even assist at the start near the track: for security reasons they must watch the start on a TV Screen inside a tent (but with Champaign...by the way the picture was taken with a Champaign OM4Ti !)
