Title: Missing, presumed dead

Diaphragm: f/5.6
Shutter speed: Unknown, but best guess 1/60
Film used: Kodachrome 64
Technical information: Shot hand-held through a window. Exposure determined by averaged spot readings.
Subject information: The emptiness of the closed cafe made me think of the victims of the terrorist attacks. It seems almost as if the chairs and tables are waiting for customers who may never return.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) The same comment as for the empty airport picture applies here: the shot has a lot of impact due to the absence of the people.

Comment left by: Anonymous Visitor Interesting picture. Ignoring the theme issue I think this picture is pretty nice from an artistic perspective. I like the symmetric behavior of the dof coupled with the strong lighting.

I wonder how it would look at f2.8 or pushing the field of focus a little forward (to the left side of the table).

Comment left by: Dan Mitchell (danielmitchell@smarttech.com) The lack of colour here really helps add to the quietness of the scene -- was this deliberate?

Comment left by: John Pendley (jpendley@alltel.net) I was drawn to this picture as I often am to images that arrest my attention, even if I don't entirely understand why. After reading your explanation of the thought that was in your mind, the picture is even more powerful. Some will say that I am getting sentimental in my old age. Some will say that a photograph should carry its meaning without verbal help (and this one does). Whatever. This is one powerful picture about lost possibilities. Who was it that wrote the song with the line, "....empty tables with empty chairs"?

Comment left by: Mickey Trageser (no e-mail specified) With a small highlight on the bottle, this could be a masterful advertisement for Heinz. You know it's ketchup. You don't even have to see the word.

Comment left by: Charles Packard (packardc@hiwaay.net) The low, soft lighting sets a somber scence. The empty chairs reminders of those gone. The place settings symbols of anticipaction of those to come.
Would'nt change a thing.

Comment left by: Andrew Fildes (afildes@netlink.com.au) Nice mood piece - good light balance. A slight tilt bothers me - note table leg/window frame upright against right margin.

Comment left by: Steve Goss (no e-mail specified) I haven't quite figured out how to say this properly, but here goes:
You've managed to portray human society (especially after Sept. 11) by showing everything except the people. The picture shows the obvious gaping hole where the people ought to be.
