Keeping Time

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Mickey Trageser
Title: Keeping Time
Gear used: OM-4T + Zuiko 50/1.4 + Radio Shack strobe light + tripod + cable release.
Diaphragm: f5.6
Shutter speed: 3 seconds
Film used: Fuji 200 print
Technical information: I wanted to capture the movement of the metronome, showing the increments of time passing. I used the strobe light for this. I put a styrofoam plate over the strobe to soften the shadow (ala flash in the pan).
Subject information: Just a metronome and Scott Joplin music sitting on some brown velvety material from the sewing room.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) Nice way of demonstrating the motion, great composition too! A lovely shot in which the only thing you might have changed would have been to add a small reflector to the right, to get rid of the shadow.

Comment left by: the photographer (no e-mail specified) I agree about the need for some fill in the shadow, but some shadow was needed to make the arm of the metronome stand out. I wanted to do some more, but I had a deadline, you know! ;-)

Comment left by: Walt Wayman (no e-mail specified) As Wallace said to Gromit, "Nicely done!"

Comment left by: Roger (robinsnes@home.com) exxcellent image...great execution of the metronome arm.

Comment left by: Wiliam Wagenaar (wiliam@zeelandnet.nl) Really nice shot that shows the difference in speed of the metronome in different positions quite well. You definitely need a derk background to make tha arm stand out. It is allways a hard decision between the interesting background with the notes and the shadow which covers it.

Comment left by: Jim Caldwell (jamesfc@gte.net) Really nicely done! I can hear a Joplin rag in the backround as I look at this one!

Comment left by: Mickey Trageser (no e-mail specified) Thanks for all the nice comments! The pendulum swing is enhanced on the right due to a 1.5 swing duration. Started left to right and climbed back almost to center again. It was a fun project!

Comment left by: bbbean (bbbean@beancotton.com) Vivid memories of piano lessons. Nicely done. I could see this hanging in my studio.
