Boat on the shore.

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Edwin Senior
Title: Boat on the shore.
Gear used: OM-2n + Motor Drive 1 + Vivitar 80-200 f/4.0 (at 200 mm) + monopod.
Diaphragm: f8
Shutter speed: 1/250
Film used: Polaroid 400.
Technical information: This was the first test of my new setup. I used the Polaroid film (actually rebranded Agfa) due to its low cost.
Subject information: This is by the side of a road that leads out to a marine biology research station run by Rutgers University.
I stopped here to shoot an abandoned menhaden processing plant and found the boat pulled up on the shore next to a bulkhead. I will be returning to this site as it has more interesting subjects that I haven't yet shot.

Comment left by: Doro (no e-mail specified) I like the repetitive structures and colours in this shot

Comment left by: Paul Wallich (pw@panix.com) Wow. I really like the colors -- it looks a little like an old black-and-white that's been hand-tinted.

Comment left by: bbbean (bbbean@beancotton.com) With the muted colors and fading edges, this has a watercolor feel. Nice. I'd like to see a series of similar shots.

Comment left by: Chung Seow Lim (boochap@pacific.net.sg) I couldnt figure out what's in the subject, but the feels of the color and the composition are great.
also, didnt expect the 3rd party vivitar lens to be so good.

Comment left by: Eric Pederson (epederso@darkwing.uoregon.edu) I too like the hand-tinted quality. It is quite a pleasing photograph. I would prefer some of the vertical elements shifted around a bit. The long vertical line from the split reflection up through the end of the pier (?) cuts the photo in half and I would prefer that line shifted over to the left (rule-of-thirds comment). This might also move the clump of green away from being exactly at the top of the main left post. Other than these quibbles, it's a very pleasing composition.

Comment left by: Chris Barker (imagopus@threeshoes.co.uk) I like the muted tones and the softness of the lines of the wood. Are there nasty chemicals in the water, leading to the colours of the vegetation?

Comment left by: Charles Sdunek (charles@mormons.com) This is nice, almost like looking at a painting.

Comment left by: Jerry Richardson (jerryric@gci.net) Nice picture. Nice use of thirds, nice use of reflections...very nice contrast. Positioning of the picture was very good...draws attention to the boat.
Has lots of feeling...gives a feeling of old...probably abandoned site.

Comment left by: John A. Lind (no e-mail specified) The time of year, time of day and weather all work to enhance this one. There's a peaceful, calm sadness about it. Most everything else has already been said about its excellent composition. Good job at capturing very well the abandoned nature of the entire scene and conveying it to the viewer.

Comment left by: Moose (dreammoose@attbi.com) Very nice image with an attractive impressionist quality. Very pleasant to contemplate.
I find that the 2 foreground elements distract me a bit. I like to think I would have moved a bit to lose the right one, separate the left one from the piling behind it and tried to get it more in focus...... but I wasn't there and don't know what was possible.

Comment left by: Scott Gomez (no e-mail specified) One of the rare instances I've seen where I think the muted colors of this kind of day have been accurately captured. IMO, a difficult shot to make at all, much less this well.

Comment left by: Mickey Trageser (no e-mail specified) Captures a solitary mood. I'd like to see more of the reflections in the water. It would be nice to have a little more sharpness and detail in the wood and brush, but that might be a scanning issue. Nice 'feel' about it.
