Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Ralph Nitschke
Title: Burnaby Lake.
Gear used: OM-4Ti + 24/2.8 + tripod.
Diaphragm: f16
Shutter speed: n/a
Film used: Fuji Reala 100 ASA.
Technical information: I used the 24mm to capture the expanse of the lake and the clouds.
Subject information: This is my first TOPE contribution, and is a shot of Burnaby Lake which is about 5 minutes from home.
During my time with the rowing club at UBC, we used to practice here in the very wee hours of the morning (4:30 AM). I was always impressed by the serenity of the lake, but this is the first time I've tried to capture it on film.

Comment left by: Winsor (wincros@earthlink.net) Lovely. Just makes me wish I was there to watch the light change.

Comment left by: Wayne Harridge (no e-mail specified) Nice hole in the clouds

Comment left by: bbbean (bbbean@beancotton.com) Good use of mood. If you hadn't indicated the time, I would have sworn this was sunset in summer. Makes me want to open a cold one and lean up against a rock.

Comment left by: John A. Lind (no e-mail specified) Welcome to the TOPE. Now we need a TOPE 1 from you! Dramatic use of lighting through the clouds and there's a nice symmetry reflection on the lake in spite of the overcast with very interesting colors. Good exposure given the extreme contrast. Wondering how long you sat out there waiting for the lighting! Nice placement of the horizon line close to a "rule of thirds" and very well done keeping it level using a 24mm f/2.8 in obviously lower lighting levels. Lenses shorter than 28mm can make this a challenge. Well done.

Comment left by: W Shumaker (rlist@zuik.net) Nice first tope. A crop emphasizing the hole in the clouds more might be interesting.

Comment left by: Moose (dreammoose@attbi.com) Nice image! As another 1st. time TOPEr, I know it can be a little nervous-making. I'll bet the original is terrific.
On the TOPE, it suffers some from the scale problem we were just discussing on the List. For the TOPE, I would crop from the right, some of the bottom and maybe even a little of the sky to get more detail in the heart of the scene on the screen.

Comment left by: Jez Cunningham (no e-mail specified) Like some others said, the dark areas could be cropped to letterbox/panoramic shape, to emphasize the hole in the clouds.

Comment left by: Mickey Trageser (no e-mail specified) I agree that a pano-crop would make the image more interesting, but as it is, it stands as a fine contribution. Welcome!
