Salt Lake 2002.

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Dave Shupe
Title: Salt Lake 2002.
Gear used: Olympus iS-3 DLX 35-180mm @ 80mm Handheld.
Diaphragm: f5.6
Shutter speed: About one and one half seconds
Film used: Fuji Provia 100asa.
Technical information: Did not have my tripod with me and had one frame left in my iS-3. I zoomed to about 80mm set the aperture to about 80mm and held my breath as I tripped the shutter.
Subject information: The Olympic rings on the hill above the University of Utah. I know that some of you will not think this qualifies as a landscape, but I figure that the same shot during the day would look like a traditional landscape, so this is just the night version. I went back the next night with my tripod, but those pictures were boring. I like the misty quality of the bluish light surrounding the lights. Waiting for the shutter to close had to be the longest 2 seconds ever and I really thought this picture would be trash. This handheld shot had just enough movement to make a much more interesting photo (IMHO).

Seriously, at first I indeed thought "this is no landscape", until I read your description. Guess it qualifies :)

Either way, I like the shot, and there's a nice glow to the circles as well.

Comment left by: Eric Pederson (epederso@darkwing.uoregon.edu) You held your breath!!! It looks like you must have stopped your heart for those 1.5 seconds too. I'm astounded. Very nice.

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) one of my favs this time around, even if stretches the "landscape" definition.

Comment left by: John A. Lind (no e-mail specified) Fascinating and well done night shot. Incredible hand held steadiness! I push the limits with hand held long exposures, but have never been able to get one that long to work. Well worth the risk. Composed very well in the frame and symbolically captures the Winter Olympics nicely.
