Snowscape

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Eric Pederson
Title: Snowscape
Gear used: Olympus 35RC w/ lens hood;
HP flatbed scanner with transparency adaptor
Diaphragm: circa f8
Shutter speed: 1/60
Film used: TMax100 at E.I.100, Xtol 1:1 Dev
Technical information: Camera braced against a tree. I overexposed the auto exposure by 2/3 stop -- i.e. since this camera has no manual exposure reading, I set the ASA at 64, but developed for 100. The contrast for the scene was very high, but I didn't want to pull the entire roll of film. This was scanned on a flatbed with a transparency adaptor which couldn't quite handle the range on the negative. I lowered contrast pretty heavily to get the highlight detail on the snow surface and the result is a bit muddy in the shadows, but I think I'll be able to print this decently...
Subject information: Recent snow on boulders, somewhere off a ski trail near Santiam Pass, Cascade Range in Oregon, USA, 22 February 2002.

Comment left by: bbbean (bbbean@beancotton.com) Very nice - one of my favorites of the bunch. I like the contrast, texture of the snow, and abstract shapes.

Comment left by: Wayne Harridge (no e-mail specified) Lighting on the snow is well captured

Comment left by: Mike Cormier (no e-mail specified) I think I'd like this shot much more if there were more contrast to the shot, and perhaps a little more brightness and unsharp as well, but these are all photoshop fixes & have little to do with camera skill which is well demonstrated here.

Comment left by: John A. Lind (no e-mail specified) I agree with Mike that there's room for some work with the scan. I also agree with Wayne . . . exposure when making the photograph has captured the snow texture has been captured very well . . . it's easy to "blow out" the texture. If you work with this one, deepen the shadow but don't raise the highlights much, if any. Very interesting drifting and quite deceptive about the hardness of boulders its covering! :-)
