February in Sedona AZ

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Wayne Shumaker
Title: February in Sedona AZ
Gear: OM-4t + 35-80/2.8 @ 35mm, Gitzo tripod with Acratech ballhead
Diaphragm: f16-f22
Shutter speed: unrecorded
Film used: Provia 100f (rdpIII)
Technical information: It was difficult getting correct exposure on Provia with such high contrast lighting. Either I get nice blue sky or nice red rock. I think Reala would have been a better choice for this late afternoon light. Slight adjustment to levels in photoshop, otherwise direct scan from LS 2000.
Subject information: I had two hours to myself and did a rigorous hike up a trail outside Sedona AZ. The shot looks much better at higher resolution. I had a number of other shots that I liked, but when reduced to 640 max resolution, they loose a lot of their punch.

Beautiful!

Comment left by: bbbean (bbbean@beancotton.com) How could you go wrong withthe AZ desert and Provia?

Comment left by: Stephen Scharf (scharfsj@ix.netcom.com) Lovely. Reminds me of Utah. I've heard wonderful things about Sedona. Wonder if I could go mountain biking there.

Comment left by: Mike Cormier (no e-mail specified) Great Shot! This could probably go into the monument TOPE... ;)

Comment left by: Wayne Harridge (no e-mail specified) Good detail from foreground to background

Comment left by: Wayne Culberson (no e-mail specified) Some pictures are defined as a landscape, this one defines "landscape".

Comment left by: Joel Wilcox (no e-mail specified) That's one gorgeous agave in the foreground.

Comment left by: Roger Wesson (roger@worldtraveller.f9.co.uk) Not sure I like the position of the plant. I might have stepped a couple of paces to the left to put it at the lower right. It somehow seems to draw my eye away from that endless expanse of wonderful scenery.

Exposure looks about right to me, actually, with a lovely blue sky and reasonable detail in the shadows.

Comment left by: Scott Gomez (no e-mail specified) I've experienced the same problems with getting the rock vs. other colors correct. There's something about the color of much of the rock here in the southwest that's very difficult to capture on film.

Captures the area well. Having been to Sedona, I'm wondering how much you had to pay all of the touristas to get out of the way...

Comment left by: Keith Rocke (keith@keithrocke.com) Hi Wayne- the mechanics of capturing/displaying the image is commendable. Allowing for the time of day the shot was taken, IMHO... and as another reviewer stated... the shot would have been more impactful by a) repositioning your camera/tripod... thus moving the foreground vegetation to the left or right, b) featuring less sky... let's face it. The sky is pretty uneventful, c) because you used the 35mm with it's fantastic DOF at small apperture... getting in closer on the vegetation... making it your dominant foreground... leading the viewer into the distant landscape, d) utilizing the '1/3 rule' to set up the shot. Otherwise... you've handled a hi-contrast scene very well. Take care...

Long live OM-4's and Zuikos
