Do Androids Dream Of..?

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Dan Mitchell
Title: Do Androids Dream Of..?
Gear used: OM2S + Zuiko 24/2
Diaphragm: f8
Shutter speed: 1/125th or so, if I remember correctly
Film used: Kodak Royal Gold 100
Technical information: I was forced to use the 24mm because of where I could stand to get this picture, and it worked out nicely for the perspective on the towers. Other than that, nothing special; the framing worked far better than I'd expected it would -- other than to clean up scanner junk, it needed no cropping. Post-scanning retouch was standard unsharp mask, nothing else.
Subject information: I was trying to take photos of the English countryside, and soon discovered that it's next to impossible (at least, where I was, namely rural Essex) to find anywhere that doesn't have power lines in the shot. After trying to conceal them behind trees and suchlike, I gave up and decided to see if I could take advantage of them instead. (oh, and apologies for the title, but once the idea came to me I couldn't resist..)

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) I share your frustration regarding to the presence of undesired objects in a picture, in my case, I absolutely hate construction cranes.

Nonetheless, you made very clever use of the powerlines, it creates nice symmetry and leading lines in the shot. Also, they provide nice framing, and they almost look like the subject of the shot.

Comment left by: bbbean (bbbean@beancotton.com) You've inspired me. There's a power substation near my home, and I've been trying for 2 years to figure out how to shoot it and make it attractive. I like the use of teh power line as frame and the feeding station and sheep seemingly unaware of the intrusion.

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) sheep? never noticed them till barry mentioned it. those things must be HUGE (even after you factor in 24mm perspective)

Comment left by: john robison (omrobison@yahoo.com) great shot, the evidence of human activity is everwhere so why not show it in our pictures, use it as an element of the image as you have done so well

Comment left by: Wayne Harridge (no e-mail specified) Great contrast between the pylons and the fence

Comment left by: Brian Swale (bj@caverock.net.nz) This could so easily be a shot made in New Zealand, but the breed of sheep is wrong for that.

If it's not powerlines in the view, it's jet vapour -trails!

An inventive solution to a perplexing problem, and it has worked well, enabling you to provide a sense of distance without having to work around (avoid) the steel cobwebs.

I like it.

Corridor of Power?

Comment left by: Jacob Cooper (jcooper19@yahoo.com) Lovely solution to the landscape problem of human objects - if it's not power lines, it's a house, or a fence, or...

The only distraction is the bright yellow caution tag. I'd try to crop it out, or make it an element; it's out of place on the edge like that. Nicely imagined.
