Submitter's name: Ira Kahn
Camera: IS3
Exposure: Auto, ~35mm/f11
Film: Kodak Pro, 100ASA
Subject information: Makhtesh Ramon, in the Israeli Negev desert.

The word makhtesh means mortar, as in mortar&pestle. Since this geologic formation is found only in Israel (there are three such formations in the Negev), the Hebrew word is used in the profesional literature.

The dark patches in the distance are intrusions from the Jurassic period. Hope that will not disqualify my entry as being out of the time limit!!

Comment left by: Brian Swale (bj@caverock.net.nz) Not at all what I imagined the Negev desert to be like; I'd thought it would be flat, sandy, windswept.

The dark brooding head is like that of a silent, unseen but all-seeing, watcher; keeping close guard over a mystical storm-eroded valley of secrets.

Beware as you enter!!

The head makes a vital difference to this shot.

Comment left by: bbbean (bbbean@beancotton.com) I'm not sure which formation you're referring to. But its nice to see a shot form the Negev.

Comment left by: Wayne Harridge (no e-mail specified) I thought the colours would be more saturated, but I like the soft effect, almost like a painting
