Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Bob Wastell
Title: Birch Shadows.
Gear used: OM-4 + Zuiko 35-105 f3.5-4.5.
Diaphragm: f11
Shutter speed: Auto, not recorded
Film used: Fuji NPS 160 ASA.
Technical information: Although I had color film loaded, the pattern of light and shadow I visualized was always in black and white. The image was converted in Photoshop Elements.
Subject information: Morning sun casts a striking pattern of shadows from a leafless stand of birch trees onto fresh snow. This east facing slope is located along the Alaska Highway west of Northway, Alaska; approximately 1,300 miles north of it's beginning at Dawson Creek, British Columbia.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) I like the maze-like pattern in this shot a lot.

Comment left by: Brian Swale (bj@caverock.net.nz) A dramatic network of shadows and shadow-makers.

Very effective.

Comment left by: bbbean (bbbean@beancotton.com) Nice patterns. This one would be a contender for the wall.

Comment left by: Wayne Harridge (no e-mail specified) I like the "spidery" trees. Would like to see it with more contrast.

Comment left by: Roger Wesson (roger@worldtraveller.f9.co.uk) Great idea for a shot. Works very well in black and white. I'd love to see a huge enlargement of it! I'm not sure a small web view can do it justice. I'd suggest pushing up the brightness and contrast a little bit, though, to get the snow looking a bit whiter.
