Winter's Last Gasp

Submitter's Name: Bruce Hamm
Title: Winter's Last Gasp
Gear Used: OM-2n + 35-70mm f3.6 (@ 70mm) + polarizer + #25 red + cheap rubber hood
Diaphragm: f16 - f22
Shutter Speed: 1/8 - 1/15
Film Used: Ilford FP4+
Technical Information: For this photo I broke just about every rule of thumb for landscape photography. I decided to shoot shortly after noon in the harshest light. I stacked filters on the end of my lens and then proceeded to point it directly into the sun. I left my tripod at home. I did not shoot with Velvia. I used the long end of the 35-70mm because I tend to prefer the more natural perspective for landscapes.
Subject: This is the end result of the last blast of winter this year. The previous night saw a pretty intense snowfall coupled with strong winds. The next morning, the trunks of all of the trees are still plastered with snow and ice.

Comment left by: Gareth.J.Martin (g.j.martin@bristol.ac.uk) What a brilliant photograph! I love the monotone aspect of the picture and the unusual way the trees lead your eyes away from the centre of the picture. I haven't seen that work as well before on an image. It just goes to show that rules are meant to be broken. I think this is my favourite photo in the whole TOPE Landscape section.

Comment left by: bbbean (bbbean@beancotton.com) I like the shot a lot, but I'm puzzled by your description. Judging from the length and direction of the shadows and the snow, I would have sworn this was looking South at about 2 or 3 in the afternoon.

After looking at this and the other photos from the shoot, I'd say that what you are saying is probably closer to the time and position. I started shooting right at noon and finished around 1:30pm. Most of my shots were towards the sun as I wanted a really high contrast look. This shot was one of the last that I took, so it was close to 1:30. The sun would have been to my right and slightly in front of me, yet enough that it wanted to cause some flare. My el-cheapo rubber lens hood saved the day ;-)

Comment left by: Mike Lazzari (no e-mail specified) I like the composition and the way the line of trees leads the eye. Also like the texture of the branches against the sky. FWIW to me it appears from the shadows that the line of trees run east and west. That means the storm came from the NW, an unusual direction for storms....at least around here.
