Moonlit Winter Landscape

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Marten Beels
Title: Moonlit Winter Landscape
Gear Used: OM-2n + Vivitar 19-35 f/3.5-4.5 + tripod + cable release
Diaphram: f/8
Shutter Speed: About 3 minutes
Film used: Fuji Sensia 100 slide film
Technical Information: I made several exposures from 2 seconds to 3-4 minutes. This was the longest one and looks the best. The scan doesn't look nearly as good as the original, a lot of the shadow detail was lost.
Subject Information: This was taken one morning at about 2 am. I couldn't sleep so I decided to go for a walk through the freezing cold night. There is a small river that runs behind my house with a path along side of it. The next day it warmed up and all the snow melted.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) Fantastic!

Nice detail control, and look at that moon; so bright it even flares!

Terrific shot!

Comment left by: Doro (no e-mail specified) wow - it's the moon!! So we see the travelling of the stars in the sky? I'm surprised how detailed and contrasty the tree-shadows are on the snow - and how natural the colour of the sky came out. Congratulations :)

Comment left by: Dave Shupe (kc7iek@attbi.com) Fantastic shot! Hard to believe it is the moon. Thought it was daytime until I read the description and noticed the star trail. Great colors, nice detail

Comment left by: bbbean (bbbean@beancotton.com) This is a great example of a shot where flare adds to the picture. Incredible colors, and great exposure. There's nothing I don't like about this picture.

Comment left by: C.H.Ling (chling@glink.net.hk) A very nice moonlight shot, living in the city I can never imagine moonlight can be that beautiful!

Comment left by: Jim Caldwell (jamesfc@gte.net) Wow, I would not have guessed that was moonlight! Not often you see a "moon flare"!!

Comment left by: Wayne Harridge (no e-mail specified) Excellent, but I'd rather not have the moon in frame

Comment left by: Joel Wilcox (no e-mail specified) In addition to the sheer cleverness of it, it's a great photo as well.

Comment left by: Chuck Norcutt (chucknorcutt@attbi.com) I like it but I think I'd like it better with a shorter exposure such that it looked more like a night rather than a day time exposure. But the star trails give it away.

Comment left by: Marten A. Beels (beels@planet.nl) An excellent picture! I am proud of my grandson. Please let me have a post card size print, so I can show it to relatives and friends.
It is nice to know you probably used my old tripod.

Comment left by: Alasdair Mackintosh (Alasdair.MAckintosh@ntlworld.com) Good, vivid picture. I was wondering if it might have been improved by having the moon slightly more obscured by the branches, to cut down on the flare?

I realise that setting up a shot like this is difficult, and that trying to keep the moon in one place is particularly hard with a long exposer. Still, the next time you've feeling restless it might be worth a try?
