View Northeast from Seaview Trail

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Moose
Title: View Northeast from Seaview Trail
Gear used: OM-4Ti + Tamron SP 60-300mm @125mm? + tripod
Diaphragm: f5.6 or f8
Shutter speed: Probably 1/125
Film used: Kodak Supra 400
Technical information: Scanned on a Canonscan FS2710 and reduced to TOPE size with successive applications of unsharp mask and resampling in Photoshop.
Getting a nice web version of a high rez scan is much trickier than I would have thought. Too little unsharp and the detail in the trees goes all mushy, too much and they look very unnatural.
I'm not entirely happy with what the JPEG does to the subtle graduations of tones and textures in the grass, and clouds/sky.
Subject information: I thought from list messages that some green hills would be nice amidst all the flat and/or wintry entries and it turns green here in midwinter. Gray, windy and chilly up at 1300' on the ridge; the trees at the bottom are at maybe 400'. The grass on the distant hills is as green as the foreground, but colored by the yellow of the late afternoon sun that is also reflected in the clouds.
It just invites one to walk forever, but the entire vista is watershed and park land surrounded out of sight by highly urbanized area. I'm lucky to be less than 5 min. from the trailhead.

Comment left by: bbbean (bbbean@beancotton.com) Surreal! I don't think I've ever seen this particular combination of colors in a landscape. I could look at this for a while.

Comment left by: Walt Wayman (hiwayman@mynra.com) Mesmerizing color, and the lighting adds to the overall hypnotic effect. This makes my top five for this TOPE event, particularly since it is a true landscape.

Comment left by: Brian Swale (bj@caverock.net.nz) This could so easily be a North Island NZ shot taken by professional landscape photographer Andris Apse - but he would have used 6 x 17 format. The landforms and vegetation look identical.

Great use of evening? light on the hills and clouds, and darkened foreground. The reflected light in the foreground pond balances the composition nicely. All in all a very well done and colourful landscape. I envy you the detail and richness of colour.

Comment left by: Stephen Scharf (scharfsj@ix.netcom.com) Nice! I know where this is....I shot an almost identical landscape to this as a potential submission for this TOPE. You were able to capture a nicer color gamut than I was.....good thing I didn't submit mine (those curious can see it here: http://www.pbase.com/image/1500360)!

Comment left by: Wayne Harridge (no e-mail specified) I'm engrossed in the effect of the colours

Comment left by: Chuck Norcutt (chucknorcutt@attbi.com) I too have been captivated by the colors. It looks like a painting instead of a real landscape... especially the top half of the frame. Where is this?

Comment left by: Scott Gomez (no e-mail specified) As many have mentioned, a very, very "painterly" photograph. Reminds me very much of works by Maxfield Parrish. Definitely one of my favorites of this TOPE.

Comment left by: Mike Lazzari (no e-mail specified) Great! Things are green around here in winter too but not _that_ green. I can appreciate the the problems with getting the jpg to match the original. Perhaps a graduated ND would help?

Comment left by: Mike Lazzari (no e-mail specified) Magical. I'm impressed by the wide latitude captured in this image from sky to shadow, both have lots of detail. One of my favorites of this TOPE

Comment left by: Jacob Cooper (jcooper19@yahoo.com) I love the play of light and shadow, and the way you captured both. Dern fine exposure!

Is it me, or does the whole picture lean a little to the left?
