Winter Orchard

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Jacob Cooper
Title: Winter Orchard
Gear used: OM-1MD, 100/2.8, tripod
Diaphragm: unknown
Shutter speed: unknown
Film used: Kodachrome 64.
Technical information: My battery had died, so I was doing a lot of bracketing of exposures that day...
Subject information: This orchard (which grows some of the most delicious apples) has always intrigued me, especially with the evening light I often see on my way home each day. There was a happy confluence of snow on the ground and clear sky and angled sun that day. This was only my second roll of Kodachrome - I can see why people debate about it! The colors in the slide are very subtle and interesting.

Comment left by: Steve Goss (no e-mail specified) Are you sure those are apple and not peach trees?

This brings back memories of working for Tree eat Orchards in Marlton, NJ. Unfortunately, it's just another housing development.

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) were u in a depression in the land? the horizon seems to curve UP at the edges of the frame

Comment left by: Wayne Harridge (no e-mail specified) I like the "soft" horizon

Comment left by: bbbean (bbbean@beancotton.com) All these snow shots!

I do like the alternating stripes of snow and bare earth going to the horizon. Good use of repeating patterns.

Comment left by: Jim Caldwell (jamesfc@gte.net) Such a simple scene and such a wonderful photo - the repeating pattern of the trees is mesmerizing!

Comment left by: John A. Lind (no e-mail specified) Well done with the bracketing. An intriguing sea of pattern with the barren trees and horizontal rows between them. The open path [??] slightly to the right of center helps make this one work by adding a subtle vanishing point to pull the eye into the image through all the horizontal lines. Indeed a happy confluence of it all. Kodachrome under these lighting conditions retains some of its contrast while providing some subtelty to the colors without punchy saturation. A good "eye" to see, visualize and make this one with a telephoto which helps enhance the pattern repetition by flattening their depth.

Comment left by: Jacob Cooper (jcooper19@yahoo.com) Thanks for the nice comments! Yes, they are apple trees - at this part of the orchard, the rows are a variety each, and we go up to get the eating apples, the baking apples, and others. :) The orchard lays over a hill, and has the most wonderful contours. I took pictures of several parts of it that day; this angle worked the best. I was just off the road, precariously poking my lens through the fence. Some of the lighter exposures also work, giving a dreamier tone to it, but I liked the contrast of this one best.

Comment left by: Mickey Trageser (no e-mail specified) Looks like we've got a long wait before those pies are ready! The bands of snow pull you to the left downhill a bit, but don't let you drop. The sweep back uphill sends you around for another look.

Comment left by: Jez Cunningham (no e-mail specified) As mentioned in my comments on another snow landscape, try a warmup filter to get rid of the blue snow shadows...
