Crossings

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Bill Barber
Title: Crossings
Equipment: Olympus OM 2S, Zuiko 35-105, T32 flash, cross screen filter & tripod.
Exposure: f22 at approx. 1 minute.
Film used: Kodak Royal Gold 200.
Technical information: This idea is one I have worked on for the past couple of years. The camera was set up on the tripod and the shutter tripped with a cable release. I then took my T32 flash and walked over & exposed the sign. Next time I plan to set up several flashes near the rail road track & get a train passing in front of & under the cross.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) A wild picture, but I like the idea.
Very minor point of improvement: it would have been nice if the crosses formed by the light sources would have been completely in parallel to the cross on the sign, but that's nitpicking.

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) whoa there, you're from Sugar Land? that is NICE place, I used to live there (First Colony), and spent a lot of time in New Territory. NICE place, would love to live there...

Comment left by: Mickey Trageser (no e-mail specified) Nice time-lapse. How did you determine the exposure for the flash on the sign? It came out perfect!

Comment left by: The photographer (no e-mail specified) The sign essentially was getting no light, so I exposed roughly based on a manual exposure using the distance from the strobe to the subject matter. I didn't want it too hot, so I didn't get too close. I had done this shot without the strobe thinking the cumlative affect of the passing car headlights would illuminte it. They didn't.

Comment left by: John A. Lind (no e-mail specified) I agree with Mickey . . . the flash exposure on the sign makes it look perfectly natural in the rest of the photograph. Would be very interesting to see how it turns out when you do this with a train passing through.

Comment left by: Alasdair Mackintosh (Alasdair.Mackintosh@ntlworld.com) The lighting balance is perfect, but I wonder if the shot wouldn't look better without the filter, so that the sign stands out more crisply against the sky?

If you return to the same subject, perhaps it's worth trying it with and without the filter?

Comment left by: Wiliam Wagenaar (wiliam@zeelandnet.nl) No, I do like the use of the filter in this picture. Just don't use it too often.

Comment left by: Jim Caldwell (jamesfc@gte.net) I like your idea! I shoot a lot of lightning pictures and I've been wanting to pull off a similiar effect - shoot the lightning with a figure in the foreground, then fire a flash to expose the foreground person. You've inspired me to give it a try!
