Retired goat stakes

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Alan Wayman
Title: Retired goat stakes
Gear used: OM-2n + Zuiko 35-70mm f4 + tripod + cable release.
Diaphragm: f16
Shutter speed: 1/250
Film used: Ilford HP5 plus.
Technical information: Negative printed on Ilford Multigrade RC paper at 8x10 - print scanned on (ancient) Umax S-6e, sharpened slightly to compensate for scanner and cropped just a little in Photoshop 7.
Subject information: This is a pair of steel stakes made to tether a pair of billy goats - as you can see they had to go a fair way into the basalt that lurks just a few inches under the soil here - after a couple of years of being hammered out of and back into the rock two or three times a week as the goats were moved about, they became as you see here - tired, stressed and in need of good like-minded company - oops sorry no that's me ......... The shadows are deliberate but I had to wait an hour or so for the sun to put them there.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) Brilliant!

I wish I had a shot like this. The shapes almost look like some snakes curling up.

Comment left by: iwert (no e-mail specified) what a brilliant image. it reminds me of blossfeldt in atmosphere and composition, however the theme is different. it also has a very nice 3d feel.

Comment left by: Wayne Harridge (no e-mail specified) Well designed image.

Comment left by: Chris (ftog@threeshoes.co.uk) Cracking idea and excellent composition. If you printed it harder the contrast might make this look really surreal.

Comment left by: Marc Lawrence (no e-mail specified) I keep seeing "Day of the Triffids" in this. Like Olaf's "snakes" comment, I think you've given something that is otherwise very hard and industrial a very organic look. Love it.
