Early Spring Rain, Yosemite Valley

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Joel Wilcox
Title: Early Spring Rain, Yosemite Valley
Gear used: OM-4T+ 50/1.8 + Bogen 3221 tripod + cable release + umbrella (just to keep the rain off)
Diaphragm: f8
Shutter speed: about 1/60
Film used: Agfa Scala 200
Technical information: Auto exposure was based on a single spot reading. It was apparently a successful spot (actually it matched the auto reading, I believe). Agfa Scala seems to suit these sorts of flat-lit conditions. Zones II to IV are very compressed. I didn't have very good experience with this film when the weather turned nicer.
Subject information: Deepening early-spring rain storm in Yosemite Valley as seen from Tunnel View. Bridalveil Fall to the right was often immersed in clouds. I waited for the fall to open up and then made the shot.

I love the mist, it makes for a mystical setting which would fit well in the scenery of Lord of the Rings! :)

Comment left by: Ken N (no e-mail specified) Add a little snow and it could have been "Clearing Winter Storm" from AA. His shot must have been from about 50 feet higher and a little farther back. This has "Serious Dodge and Burn" written all over it--a negative that could be interpreted in the darkroom a 100 different ways.

Comment left by: Lama (no e-mail specified) Wow! This is a really nice picture: cool composition, a real feeling of successive layers as your eye moves from the background to the foreground, enough detail to make the various shapes hold interest but not so much as to distract from the composition of shapes. A fine example of 'fine art photography'.

Comment left by: Gary Edwards (no e-mail specified) No fair! The weather never did anything when I've been there!

Comment left by: Saso (no e-mail specified) Wow. The first verse of "Brothers in Arms" came to mind. Great shot.

Comment left by: Peter Collins (pjc1652@aol) Very impressive shot, beautiful composition. Nothing fancy either - 'just' the standard lens.

Comment left by: Andy Gilbert (gilbs@142tpr.freeserve.co.uk) Brilliant, striking as a thumbnail, moody at full size on screen, a large print must be magnificent! I really want to visit Yosemite someday.
