Night of the Tiger

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's Name: Gregg Iverson
Title: Night of the Tiger
Gear Used: OM4T + 24/2.8 + T20 flash + tripod + locking cable release + red-filtered flashlight + watch
Diaphragm: f8
Shutter Speed: ~12 minutes
Film Used: Fuji Reala 200
Technical information: I used the 24mm to keep the foreground and stars in focus as much as possible. The T20 was used off-camera to paint the trees and flowers and was fired by grounding to my copper bracelet. The flashlight was used to paint the Tiger Lily's petals. Cropped and manipulated in PhotoShop LE to remove the green overcast from mercury night lights in the background and evidence of the red flashlight that showed on the side of the photo.
Subject information: While I was wandering around painting with light I was visited by three different neighborhood pets who were curious about a human being out in the field after dark. I had to guard my tripod and the flowers to keep the pets from moving anything. The neon light on the T20 proved handy for finding it when I laid it down on the dark ground and moved away.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (olaf_greve@hotmail.com) Very nice effect (i.e. the star trails and the manually flashed flowers). The surreal colours somehow make the picture look a bit like an underwater picture, where you're looking at coral with a school of tiny white fishes swimming above it; neat!

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) how long did it take to paint the lily? doesn't seem to a lot of motion blurring, so must've been a calm night. the effect, as it see it, is almost like it was taken close to dawn with the milky light starting to rise in the background. Like it. Here's a photo w/ similar technique: quite nifty, and I have to try it.

Comment left by: Anonymous Visitor The flashlight used was one of those little red keychain thingies that is squeezed to light. I just moved it around from area to area. There was no breeze.

Comment left by: Matt BenDaniel (matt@exceloncorp.com) Very nice picture. However, this JPEG should have been saved with higher quality (increasing its storage size). The image is degraded because of that. You should re-submit the image to Olafo for replacement here. Your excellent picture deserves a better showing.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (olaf_greve@hotmail.com) Matt, this picture was sent to me as a 1.2MB .PSD file. My first thoughts were also that I messed something up in JPEG-ing it. However, the settings were fine and it's actually the .PSD file that already suffers from these "rough edges"; JPEG-ing it didn't add any visible deterioration to it...
Either way: as far as I'm concerned the submitter can re-submit a higher quality picture if they like, but as it's been somewhat of an ordeal for them, I'm not sure they will want to try this again ;)

Comment left by: Norm (no e-mail specified) I've tried to do something similar in the past, with results I wouldn't want to share. Very tricky to compose and set up with nothing but a flashlight. Well done on an excellent picture. You've inspired me to try again!

Comment left by: Joel Wilcox (jowilcox@blue.weeg.uiowa.edu) Very creative and interesting.

Comment left by: Amanda Gregson (hazeleyes296@yahoo.com) I'm a student in your class, and I found this picture and really like the effect of the stars, and the red light on the flowers. Great Shot.
